Bell Wing (1930-2001)
Toronto General Hospital (TGH)

The pictured Toronto General Hospital building was located at 585 University Ave and stood for over 70 years at the corner of University Ave and Gerrard Street West.

This building was opened on April 25, 1930 as the Private Patients Pavilion. In 1983, its name was changed to the Thomas J. Bell Wing after Thomas J. Bell who was a former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Toronto General Hospital.

The company that designed this building was the Canadian architectural firm of Pearson and Darling. It was constructed by the W.H. Yates Construction Company. The building was shaped like the letter "T" with 10 floors in total (9 above ground floors and 1 basement floor) and some rooms had small French balconies.

This building had cost over $2,000,000 to make and it originally had 321 beds. This was a large sum during the time of the Great Depression. In 2001, the 71 year old building was taken down and replaced by the new clinical services building.

One of the original parts of the old building still preserved is the old main portico door that is now located in the patients court of the new clinical services building.
